Popping and Locking

Popping and Locking are two different Street Dance styles, also called Funkstyles. Both dance styles have their origin in the late 1960s in California USA.

Popping originated from the Funk dance Boogaloo and the Robot dance with moves such as waves, the fresno, twisto flex and also the Backslide. Over the years, these dance styles have evolved. For example, Michael Jackson renamed the backslide to the Moonwalk. Don Cambell invented the Locking dance style. He performed certain funk dance styles differently than people were used to. As a result, this cheerful dance was created with movements such as points, locks, skooby doo, skoobot and pacing, where you set the rhythm like a drummer. Both dance styles have been a major influence on many artists who use a lot of dance in their music videos. You can also see the influence in hip-hop dance styles.

Originally it is often performed on nice Soul and Funk music, but of course every nice beat lends itself to it.

As a Street Dance specialist I have followed all these developments and dance them from the 70s. So you learn real moves with fun facts and facts about the dance.
